The 9th annual Canberra Botanical exhibition opened on Friday 23rd September to an enthusiastic gathering of over 200 people. The exhibition started as a showcase of local artists and has now expanded to include entries from the ACT, Victoria, NSW, Western Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New Zealand. Credit for its popularity goes to the many artists who now submit works for this juried exhibition. On display in 2011 were 154 paintings from 71 artists.
Canberra Botanical 2011 was opened by Dr Philip Moors, Director and Chief Executive of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, since 1992. The organisation includes the botanic gardens at South Yarra and Cranbourne, the National Herbarium of Victoria and the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology. Philip received an Australian Centenary Medal in 2003 for services to the community through conservation and the environment. He spoke at the opening about the design and creation of the award winning Australian Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2011.
Guests at the opening remarked that ‘it was the most interesting opening of an art exhibition I have ever attended’. During the exhibition some very complimentary comments were also received from a continuous stream of visitors. A sample of these remarks follows:
